Fergus FitzGerald

"I find art much more interesting than gardening"

Fergus Fitzgerald joined the KCAT Studio in 2012 where he has continued to develop a substantial and dedicated body of work. He has presented work internationally and shown widely in Ireland.

Fergus creates beautifully coloured paintings with captivating expressive and compositional looseness, often depicting buildings, landscapes and other imagery from various parts of the world. His works are a bridge to other places demanding to be known about and explored, if not yet in person, then at least through artworks. Thereby, his practice can be understood as an ever-expanding cartography of both memory and aspiration, fuelled by his endless fascination for places in the world that he has visited or intends to visit.

Fergus is also lover of linguistics and intensely researches the histories and contemporary realities of the places depicted in his paintings. He works with posca acrylic markers to write some of this information, as well as some of his own experiences and personal reflections, in multi-coloured text directly onto the painted image. It is this use of text that is the most distinctive element of his work. The dynamic tension generated between image and text gives his work a formal complexity and depth. The resulting works contain a natural beauty and vibrancy that draw the viewer towards Fergus’ own intense sense of wonder and excitement.
