FERGUS FITZGERALD EXHIBITION
Geography Is Important
Geography Is Important, a retrospective exhibition by Fergus FitzGerald at Sirius Arts Centre in Cohh, Co. Cork. The exhibition surveys FitzGerald’s practice and is the most comprehensive presentation of his work to date. It results from a five-year engagement between the artist, the Sirius team and selected staff at KCAT Arts Centre. This is a must-see exhibition.
The exhibition opens this Friday, May 2, from 3pm to 5pm and runs until Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Sirius Arts Centre, The Old Yacht Club, Westbourne Place, Cobh, Co. Cork, P24 F209.
Geography Is Important
“FitzGerald’s practice is informed by his travels throughout Europe, both real and imaginary – he is an excursionist to lands familiar and foreign. He draws connections between geographies he has visited with his family and those he hopes to explore in the future, melding lived experience with research conducted online and through expansive reading. FitzGerald is largely concerned with urban scenarios, and mostly paints landmarks – monuments, main streets. He registers, whether directly or through reproductions, the shapes that compose a single building’s facade or a whole stretch of a city skyline, and then confidently arranges those minute details into gestural vivid, rhythmic renderings. FitzGerald’s style is characterised by broad brushstrokes and streaks of paint that create atmospheric backdrops of the built environment. The fast-drying properties of acrylic paint capture his intent with immediacy. His framings of cities as panoramas results in kaleidoscopic and energetic representations of place.”
